Apple Open Its First Apple Store in India
On Tuesday, around 300 enthusiastic Apple fans lined up outside the company’s newly opened retail store in Mumbai, India. Excited customers eagerly took selfies with Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, who was present to inaugurate the store, highlighting the significance of the Indian market for the tech giant.
Apple fans from various parts of the country gathered at the store, some even queuing up overnight in anticipation of being among the first to enter. The opening event featured local music and folk dancers, adding to the festive atmosphere.
During the opening of the Mumbai store, Tim Cook greeted customers and took selfies with some of them, adding a personal touch to the event. He is also scheduled to attend the opening of a second store in Delhi on Thursday. The Mumbai store, located in an upscale neighbourhood, features a design inspired by the iconic black-and-yellow taxis synonymous with the city. This marks a significant move for Apple, as until now, its products were available in India only online or through resellers.
The launch of these new stores is crucial for Apple, as the company aims to expand its retail presence in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market. Despite being considered an aspirational product, the iPhone faces competition from more affordable Android devices, which account for over 95% of smartphones in the price-sensitive Indian market. Apple’s push to establish physical retail stores in India underscores its commitment to capturing a larger share of this growing market.
Despite Apple products being available online in India, the physical retail store drew a significant crowd of eager customers. The store’s launch was met with excitement and anticipation, showcasing the strong demand for Apple products in the Indian market.
Purav Mehta, a 30-year-old Apple fan, eagerly waited in line at the Mumbai retail store, hoping to get Tim Cook’s signature on his mint-condition iPod Touch, which he had purchased on eBay. He was also excited to buy the Apple Watch Ultra. Many fans at the store were seen wearing T-shirts inspired by Steve Jobs, sporting haircuts shaped like the Apple logo, and even bringing vintage Apple products like the first Apple computer from 1984.
Aan Shah, a 23-year-old who travelled from Ahmedabad, described the unique vibe at the store, saying, “It’s not like buying from some normal store. There’s just no comparison. It’s so exciting.” He shared that he had attended Apple store openings as a New York and Boston student, where he had even met Tim Cook.
Opening physical retail stores in India has been a challenge for Apple. Still, the company’s products have been available online through e-commerce websites, and an online store was launched in 2020.
The new store comes at a time when Indian consumers are increasingly looking to upgrade their smartphones to more premium models with advanced features, even though budget devices typically cost less than $120
Despite Apple’s popularity, its premium-priced phones remain affordable to only a small portion of the Indian market, where it currently holds a 3% share. The new retail store in the Jio World Drive mall owned by Reliance held a private event for bloggers and tech analysts on Monday. Cook also met with Indian film and television celebrities that night. Another store in Delhi is scheduled to open on Thursday, and Cook is expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the deputy IT minister later in the week.
As part of Apple’s efforts to expand its manufacturing base in India, some of its products, including iPhones, are being assembled by Taiwanese contract electronics manufacturers Foxconn and Wistron Corp. The company also has plans to assemble iPads and AirPods in India, showcasing its commitment to local manufacturing and investment in the Indian market.
Apple’s move to diversify its supply chains and increase iPhone production in India is a strategic decision to reduce its dependence on China for manufacturing. With India accounting for 5% of total iPhone production, Apple is taking steps to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions and trade disputes.
While the new stores in India are seen as an important branding strategy, experts believe they may have a small impact on Apple’s sales in the country. However, they highlight Apple’s focus on capturing the growing premium smartphone market in India, where consumers are willing to invest in higher-priced mobiles costing 40,000 rupees (£451; $558) or more.
Opening Apple stores in India is expected to provide a premium experience for Apple customers, which could help attract more consumers into the Apple ecosystem. This move aligns with Apple’s long-term strategy of creating a loyal customer base and fostering brand loyalty among premium consumers in the Indian market.
Apple’s plans to open physical retail stores in India have faced delays, including the most recent setback in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Apple CEO Tim Cook’s visit to India in 2023 marks his first trip to the country in seven years, with his last visit taking place in 2016 when Apple was starting to expand its operations in India.
During his visit, Cook has been engaging in cultural experiences, such as trying popular Indian snacks like vada pav and meeting Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit. Reports suggest that Cook is also expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Deputy IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar during his visit. However, there has yet to be an official announcement from Mr Modi’s office regarding these meetings.
Cook’s visit to India highlights Apple’s continued interest in the Indian market and its efforts to strengthen its presence through retail expansion and engagement with key government officials. India’s growing economy and large population make it an attractive market for global tech companies like Apple, despite challenges posed by competition and price sensitivity among consumers.
